Robert Young’s path to brewing wasn’t conventional, but it was inevitable. Growing up in Ellenwood, a tight-knit community in East Atlanta, beer wasn’t something he thought much about. That changed in college when a visit to Terrapin Brewery in Athens introduced him to the depth and craft behind brewing. It was the first spark of what would become a full-fledged passion.
His journey took an unexpected turn when he joined the U.S. Navy, a decision that took him around the world—and straight into some of the most storied beer cultures on the planet. While stationed in Prague, he had a defining moment at the Urquell Brewery, where a perfectly poured pilsner turned curiosity into conviction. Brewing wasn’t just something to appreciate; it was something he wanted to create.
When Robert returned from service, he didn’t waste time. He started homebrewing, experimenting, and refining his skills with an obsessive dedication that eventually landed him at Savannah River Brewing Co. As an assistant brewer, he quickly made his mark, most notably with Good Googly Moogly IPA—a bold, hop-forward creation that became a fan favorite and a key step toward launching his own future venture, Tapped 33.
Determined to take his craft even further, Robert recently completed an intensive brewing program in Germany, immersing himself in both tradition and innovation. That experience sharpened his technical skills and broadened his perspective, reinforcing his drive to push craft beer forward.
At Savannah River Brewing Co., Robert’s presence is felt in every pint he brews. His story—one of passion, discipline, and constant evolution—isn’t just about making beer. It’s about perfecting a craft, embracing the journey, and sharing something meaningful with the people who drink it.
